Norwich home destroyed by fire Sunday
NORWICH -- Investigation wrapped up early Monday into a house fire which happened late Sunday afternoon on 42 Stover Street in Norwich. Members of the Norwich Fire Department arrived Sunday at about 5:45pm to find the home fully engulfed in flames.
Volunteer fire crews from Burgessville, along with Woodstock Fire Department's aerial rescue truck were also called to the scene. The fire took over three hours to bring under control with crews initially beginning the call inside the home but later were forced outside to tackle the blaze. Fire crews gained control of the scene shortly after 9:00pm.
The home had four residents and a dog all inside at the time the fire occurred, but all were able to escape safely without injury.
Norwich Township Fire Chief Bob Parsons says firefighters were able to confirm a woodstove in the home as the cause.
"In further investigation we determined the woodstove was not properly installed, and combustibles close to the woodstove and the ducting is what originally started on fire."
Roads in the area were closed for several hours to assist the fire department. While Stover Street reopened Monday morning to traffic, Parson's says the home is currently being protected from the walking public by fencing around the property.
Parsons thanked to community for coming together with their support, along with OPP and volunteer fire crews who all played their part in putting the fire out.
Victim Services of Oxford County is helping provide overnight accommodation for the displaced family at a local hotel. Some cats were reported to be in or around the home at the time of the fire, but officials say they did not recover any from the scene as of Monday. While there was no firm damage estimate, Parsons described the home and its contents as "a complete loss."
