Federal Election On the Horizon

There are reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney will call a federal election on Sunday.

OTTAWA/OXFORD - It looks like Canadians could be heading to the polls a month from now.

There are reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney will call a federal election on Sunday March 23rd. The sources with the information have not been able to confirm a specific date for the election itself, federal elections have to run for at least five weeks. This means Canadians could be heading to the polls as early as April 28th.

During his resignation announcement on January 6th, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prorogued Parliament until March 24th. Mark Carney officially replaced him as the head of the Liberal Party after the leadership vote on March 9th, and he was sworn in as Canada's 24th Prime Minister on March 14th.

Heart FM is aware of three federal candidates who intend on running in Oxford County at this time. Arpan Khanna will be running for re-election as the Conservative Member of Parliament, and he will be up against Liberal candidate David Hilderley once again. Matthew Chambers will represent the NDP on the ballot.

Khanna won the Oxford County byelection in June 2023 with 16,144 votes, while Hilderley and the Liberals placed in second with 13,574 votes. The NDP finished in third with 3,931 votes in favour Cody Groat, who was the candidate at the time.
