Federal And Provincial Government Commit Over $350,000 To Help Chicken Farmers During Emergencies

The provincial and federal government are investing in strengthening emergency responses for Southwestern Ontario chicken farmers. The project will provide third-party service that makes sure chickens are handled in a humane manner during emergencies, including a disease outbreak or barn damage caused by a fire or extreme weather.

MOOREFIELD- Chicken farmers across Southwestern Ontario will now get help from both the federal and provincial government in times of an emergency.

In a press release yesterday, it states both governments are committing $350,873 in cost-share to the Chicken Farmers of Ontario.

Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman says this program ensures chicken farmers are prepared. 

"Emergency situations are a reality on farms. It's important to our government to make sure that if and when those emergencies happen, farmers have a system in place to humanely deal with the animals involved. We're pleased to be able to help Ontario's chicken farmers strengthen their capacity to manage emergencies by supporting this project through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership."

Hardeman and Chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario, Ed Benjamins were among the dignitaries on hand to make a formal announcement yesterday afternoon at Benjamins' farm, located north of Stratford.
