The 11th Annual Gord Marshall tournament will raise funds for the Innerkip Park & Rec department this year.
INNERKIP -- Womens' fastball will be taking over the diamonds of Innerkip this weekend.
The 11th Annual Gord Marshall tournament kicked off Thursday night and runs through to Sunday evening.
Media Relations Coordinator, Kyle Smith says they have 20 teams from across Ontario participating in this year's event. "Down the Windsor way up towards Toronto-Etobicoke way, Hamilton, Brantford, that kind of neck of the woods. We've got one team coming back from Quebec - the Quebec senior team, defending National champs from last year at the senior women's championship. Up towards Whitby, down as far south - you know we'll head to the lake down there. All across Ontario and that's the biggest thing about us is we bring everybody in from all across Ontario."
In a release, Smith highlights the annual event started in 2004 as a fundraiser for the Innerkip ladies' team but they handed the reins over to the local umpires in 2006. The tournament was used to not only showcase excellent womens' fastball teams but also raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of a former friend, ball player and fellow umpire Gord Marshall who passed away in 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer.
After 10 years and $110,000 raised, Smith says they are shifting their focus to another organization. "After 10 years of heavy, intense labour - stepped back a little bit and this year our charity of choice is the Innerkip Parks & Rec department. Trying to give back to the community that we do everything in and keep that part to where it is and trying to develop more and give more back there."
The event is free to spectators and will include a number of activities including games of chance, raffles, silent auction, 50/50 draw and beverage tent.
