For farmers that were hit hard by this year's summer drought, help is coming, and for two local farms, help has already arrived. This week, a large shipment of hay from the "Hay East" program arrived outside of Innerkip to the LittleJohn farm. (In photo right) Another shipment when to a Burgessville area farm, and more is coming to the south end of Oxford and Norfolk Counties. The hay comes from farms in western Canada and northern Janine Lunn with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture says these are huge loads of hay. "It was a 38 bail load on a huge trailer. I had a hard time measuring them just by eyeballing them...they were pretty sizeable bails." The hay comes from farms in western Canada and northern Ontario. Lunn says it's a major collaborative effort. "OFA is a major partner working with Mennonite Disaster Services. So they're working together with other farm groups to determine all the logistics...applications, a website, the communications, trying to organize all the transportation and the selection process as well." Despite all the work involved, Lunn says the program is very rewarding when the shipments finally coming in, providing feed for the farmers and they're livestock that need it. Lunn says the program has roots from about 10-years ago, and was called Hay West, when farmers in western Canada were hit with drought, and farmers in the East rallied this program together to help BAIL them out by shipping bails of hay for their livestock. We'll have more updates on the program as more help arrives here in southern Ontario.
