Beware of suspicious emails from scam artist claiming to have video of you containing explicit content, and they are threatening to go public if victims don't pay up.
WOODSTOCK - Yet another scam is making the rounds. locally. In this one, victims are receiving an email threatening a video containing explicit content of the victim will be made public if they do not pay a fee immediately to the scammer.
The victims say they have received emails from scammers citing a password that they are currently using or previously used as proof that they have hacked their computer while they were visiting a pornographic site. The scammer then claims they gained access to the victims webcam and recorded them.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says that no actual video exists and people should know that the passwords the scam artist are using have been obtained from previous data breaches.
Woodstock Police offer the following tips to prevent this type of scam from happening to you:
· Do not open the message or click links within the message
· Delete the message
· Change your passwords every few months
· Make your passwords long and strong (include lower and upper case letters, number and symbols)
