The Oxford Historical Society is delving deep into the records for a new book to celebrate Canada's 150th.
The Oxford Historical Society is working on a new book to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary.
Past Secretary of the Society Chris Packman tells Heart FM he is writing the book Quizzical History that will examine local history.
"Once a week we published a history question in the Oxford Review and three weeks later we would give the answer and if someone from the public provided the right answer we would give them a prize."
Packman says they have 157 questions that appeared in the Oxford Review from 1999 to 2003.
A sample question would be 'What is at the bottom of Trout Lake in Innerkip?'
The answer is a plane. Not just any plane - a Harvard trainer aircraft from WW2, similar to the ones owned by the Woodstock Flying Club. The plane was placed at the bottom of the lake by the Scuba Restaurant in the 1970's. It was placed at the bottom of the lake as a vestige for scuba divers to dive to. Recently the Scuba Diving Club also sank a boat around 30 feet long as a companion to the Harvard.
The Oxford Historical society is a registered non-profit society that helps to promote public interest in the history of Oxford County. They host monthly meetings featuring a quest speaker familiar with some aspect of city or county history. The meetings run from September to May on the last Wednesday of every month. An annual membership to the society costs $25 per person or $30 for a family.
The society is headquartered in the Old Governor's House in Woodstock that is at the back of the offices of Oxford County Board of Health.
