Roughly six million Canadians will struggle with addiction in their lifetime and Oxford County is certainly not exempt.
WOODSTOCK - It's National Addictions week and this years theme is Addiction Matters and drawing attention to substance misuse and chronic health issues.
A number of local organizations are working together in Oxford County to raise awareness about some of the problems we have with addiction locally. CMHA Oxford Executive Director Mike McMahon tells Heart FM they want to erase the stigma that surrounds people with addiction problems.
"By saying addiction illness it defeats stigma and stigma around addictions illnesses is crushing for people who have an addictions illness for their family or their friends who may even be ready to get help or seek help, however they will not step forward to get the help they need because of the stigmatizing language they experience around them every day."
Roughly six million Canadians will struggle with addiction in their lifetime and McMahon says people with mental health problems are more likely to fall into that category. McMahon says they want to make sure everyone is aware of the support systems that are available to them.
"Because addiction matters, all Canadians have a fundamental right to access high-quality, consistent prevention, treatment and recovery support services. CMHA Oxford works to address the many harms of substance misuse and addiction, and bring hope to the lives of those who are struggling with recovery."
