Families in Oxford County are being reminded to always be prepared for disaster.
It's Emergency Preparedness week, which brings awareness to all the potential disasters which could occur and how you should always be prepared for the worst.
Families in Oxford can do lot's to prepare for an emergency. Diane Marshall, the Supervisor of the Emergency Management Program says every home should have an emergency plan.
"So everyone knows what to do, where the emergency supplies are kept and if you were ever separated during an emergency where you would meet."
Each home should also have an emergency kit on hand. These kits should be stocked with items like blankets and non perishable food. They should last you 72 hours. Marshall says as right now less than 40% of homes have these kits ready to go.
"We would really like to see our community get that number up. Often times the equipment we need in our kits is in our houses somewhere but it could be in the garage or the junk drawer and it's just a matter of pulling together and everyone in the family knowing where it is so they can get it together as quickly as possible."
Extreme weather is one of the most common disaster causes in Oxford as of right now. These weather conditions include tornados, snow storms, ice storms, rain storms and extreme temperatures.
Marshall tells about another potential disaster cause.
"We do have a number of rail lines that travel through our community that are carrying hazardous materials. Then we have the 401 and the 403 corridor, which of course the trucks going down those roads are containing material that if in the event anything happened, they're very dangerous and it could be a very serious situation on our hands."
