City of Woodstock continues to tackle the Emerald Ash Borer
WOODSTOCK - The Parks and Recreation department is making quick work of diseased ash trees in the city. Orginally 5 years was slated for the removal of ash trees affected by the emerald ash borer pest. Woodstock Director of Parks and Recreation David Connors expects that number to be reduced.
Around 600 trees have been removed, many from wooded lots. Connors points out the focus is now on street tree removal.
"A lot of the ash trees that we are focusing on now are street trees, we've got a lot of the ash trees down in our woodlots and around parks areas."
Parks and Recreation also replaces the removed trees, and Connors expects it to be complete within two years. The ash borer has wreaked havoc across Ontario destroying the trees en masse. In many cases costing cities hundreds of thousands-- in some cases millions of dollars.
