Alex "Farm Boy" Matheson won a unanimous decision in his first main event last Saturday night.
EMBRO - A local boxer is thanking the hometown crowd for giving him that extra boost in his most recent fight.
Alex "Farm Boy" Matheson recently beat Ramsay Ali in the main event at a boxing show in Brantford last Saturday. Matheson says the crowd really helped him out.
"We had a lot of people come out and a lot of people come out to see their first live boxing match. I think they really enjoyed it and I enjoyed it too, you could hardly hear anything, other than the people screaming and cheering. It definitely fuels you, if you land a big shot and the crowd roars, that can be enough to keep you going and tip the scales on a fight. It really meant a lot to me that I had the support that I did."
Ali took the fight at the last minute after the other boxer dropped out. Matheson says he was extremely grateful to Ali, who has 27 amateur fights under his belt for taking this fight at the last minute. Matheson explains how he was able to win the fight with a unanimous decision.
"Ali is pretty good, pretty experienced. He showed up wearing his team Canada jacket, so at one point or another he was on the National team. It was a little intimidating but I got in there, stuck with the game plan, out worked him and laid the body shots early on, tired him out and managed to score enough points to win by unanimous decision."
Matheson's record now stands at 11 wins and 4 losses. He is already preparing for his next fight. Matheson says his goal is to to rack up 40 amateur fights before turning pro.
