It's Elder Abuse Awareness Week - a week designed to bring attention to some of the dangers our seniors face.
It's elder abuse awareness week.
Elder abuse usually takes three forms: physical, emotional, and verbal. While the physical abuse can sometimes be obvious, the other forms are not as easy to detect.
Oxford OPP Constable Stacey Culbert tells Heart FM a couple of signs you should watch out for, "Are they withdrawing from activities, are they more depressed and not wanting to talk about family members who recently came for a visit? It's important to talk with our local seniors and listen to their complaints to make sure they are not being abused."
Elder abuse is similar to bullying and can be as simple as name calling or even restricting a senior from doing something in their own home. Financial abuse is also another big concern. This occurs when someone tries to scam seniors or take advantage of their good nature for their own financial gain.
Culbert says if you suspect a senior is being abused to ask questions and report the abuse to the proper agency or the OPP.
