WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are putting out some safety tips to cannabis users, now that edibles are legally available for purchase in the Province.
Edibles affect your body and your brain differently than smoking marijuana. They need to be metabolized through the entire digestion process before resulting in a much more intense high. It can take up to 2 hours for them to kick and it can take up to 4 hours to feel the full effects. The effects from edibles can last for 12 hours.
If you choose to possess or consume cannabis edibles:
· Ensure the packaging is clearly marked as a cannabis product
· Keep edibles out of reach for children and pets to avoid accidental consumption
· Do not get behind the wheel after consuming cannabis. Have a plan to get home safely – Drug Recognition Experts have special training to detect drug use/impairment
· Start low and go slow – if you are new to cannabis edibles, start with products that contain no more than 2.5 mg of THC and wait up to several hours for effects – do not consume more cannabis to speed up the process.
· Avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol or other drugs – this increases impairment.
Parents please educate yourself and talk to your children about the dangers of cannabis and driving impaired. 52% of teens do not recognize the danger of driving under the influence of cannabis.
