Earn-A-Bike Is Back

Six Woodstock youth will have the opportunity to work with the Woodstock Police service to Earn-A-Bike.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are hoping to help six youngsters earn a bike again this year.

Community Service officer with the Woodstock Police Service, Constable Steve McEwen says they are looking for children between the ages of 10 and 14 who might enjoy working with the police for a week in exchange for a brand new bicycle

"We select candidates and they get to work with the police here in Woodstock and we go around and do things like - down at Southside Park, cleaning up the flower beds and some painting and things like that to improve the community.”

“We've had 10 [participants] in the past, but this year it's only going to be 6."

The chosen applicants will be picking up garbage, painting, covering graffiti, and other tasks around the city. Constable McEwen says it's not all hard work though - he makes sure to schedule in some free time.

"Every year the kids actually have a good time. I mean through the week even - I've taken them swimming and given them a little free time. So it's not 40 hours of hard labour, there's some fun in there too."

The program runs for one week, starting on July 6th but applications are being accepted now. To submit an application, go to the Woodstock Police's website, click on Earn-A-Bike, and fill in the application. Applications can either be dropped off in person, or submitted electronically until the end of May.
