9 area children worked 30 hours of community service for a new bicycle

WOODSTOCK- 30 hours of community service later, nine Woodstock children are proud new owners of brand new bicycles. The participants took part in the Tim Horton's sponsored 'Earn-a-Bike' program that partnered with Woodstock police. Each child was required to fulfill 30 hours of community service. 12 year old Brittany Ratelband was covered in green paint when she received her bicycle. 

"So we painted probably over 100 garbage cans at Pittock Park and at Southside for sidewalk days and lots of different things and we painted the building across from City Hall the old Reg Hall building because there was graffiti on it-we painted that green."
 
Participants logged 30 hours pulling weeds in Southside Park, painting graffiti covered walls downtown and painting garbage cans at Pittock Park. Participants also received a helmet and lock along with the bicycle. The program this year received over 30 applications. 

"Out of the number of applicants that we get we select ten and they have to be between the ages of 10 to 14, live in Woodstock for our program and we put them to work for the week," said Woodstock Media Relations Officer Steve McEwen. 

Throughout the week participants were provided a free lunch by Tim Horton's and at the end of the program received a certificate to recognize their community service contributions and completion of the 'Earn-a-Bike' program.  

Woodstock media relations officer Steve McEwen encourages Woodstock cyclists to register their bicycles online to protect themselves against bicycle thefts.
