The Woodstock Police and the Canadian Lifesaving Society are sharing a few key messages during Drowning Prevention Week. Among them include to actively supervise children around the water and to always wear a life jacket in a boat.
WOODSTOCK - It is drowing prevention week and the Woodstock Police and the Canadian Lifesaving Society have a couple of key messages to share.
They want to make sure everyone understands the dangers of open water and backyard pools. Please keep these messages in mind the next time you are heading for the water:
- Approximately 500 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents annually.
- Always actively supervise children around the water - if you're not within arms' reach, you've gone too far.
- Always wear a life jacket in a boat. Live changes in an instant and you don't want them to float away when you need them most.
- In most drownings, the victim never intended to go in the water and was often close to safety.
- Alcohol consumption is a factor in almost 40% of boating-related fatalities. Both alcohol and cannabis impairs judgement, reflexes and balance.
