OPP officers say drivers should slow down as quickly as possible if they come across a deer on the road.
WOODSTOCK - Oxford County OPP are once again reminding motorists to be aware of their surroundings and not to veer for deer.
If a deer happens to cross into your path while you are driving, police are asking that you do not swerve and that you remain in control of the vehicle. Slow down as much as possible and continue driving straight if a deer walks onto the road. Quickly changing direction can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Losing control can cause you to drive off the road or even roll your vehicle, which may cause serious injury.
Deer don't limit their activity on rural roads. The animals have been known to cross the busy roadways as well and are most often seen 90 minutes before and after sunrise or sunset. Driving slower during these times of the day can help because the slower you drive the more time you have to react to a deer on the road.
When you see one cross the road keep your eyes open as there are probably more not far behind. If driving at night watch for their glowing eyes in the dark.
Removing all distractions is the best way to make sure you are aware of your surroundings and will give you the best chance to see and predict where a deer might go.
