Police are reminding parents and caregivers that it is illegal to smoke in your vehicle when children are present.
SIMCOE - The OPP are reminding the public to never smoke inside a vehicle with your children.
Police were called to Real Canadian Superstore parking lot in Simcoe this afternoon after someone spotted a parent smoking inside his vehicle with two small children in the rear seats.
It is illegal to smoke in your vehicle when the occupants are 16 years old or younger.
Under the law, a driver or passenger smoking in a motor vehicle, while someone else under the age of 16 is present, is committing an offence, and can be fined $125. Second-hand smoke in motor vehicles can be up to 27 times more concentrated than in a smoker's home.
Staff Sargeant Joe Varga says the law is designed to protect children.
"Drivers often take extra care to protect children in vehicles; having smoke-free cars should be part of that protection."
