Woodstock's Ryley Mitchell received a heart transplant eight years ago and is encouraging people to become registered donor.
WOODSTOCK -- A single organ donor can save the lives of eight people.
Woodstock Hospital is showing their support for those waiting for donations by promoting National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week with an information booth set up in their lobby.
Local Joanna Mitchell says if it wasn't for a donor, her daughter Ryley wouldn't be here today.
"On January 19,2006 she was listed and she was very fortunate in that her wait for a transplant was only ten days so January 29 she received a new heart and eight years later you can see she is growing and thriving and doing well with her new heart."
Mitchell says over 1500 people in Ontario are waiting for an organ.
"And really, when we are gone we don't need our organs. Why not give life to other people? You can save up to 8 lives with one donor and enhance the lives of 75 others with tissue donation."
Mitchell says the provincial average for registered donors is 24 percent.
"In Woodstock we are doing pretty well, we are above the provincial average with 32 percent registration rate so we are not bad but we want to work on that. 32% is still kind of low and we rank 67 out of 179 communities."
An information booth has been set up in the Woodstock Hospital this week which will provide more information to those considering organ donation.
Mitchell says locals need to make sure their wishes are known by registering online at www.beadonor.ca .
