MIAMI - A Canadian acting legend has passed away.
Officials say Donald Sutherland died in Miami yesterday after a long illness. He was 88 years old.
His son, fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland, announced his death in a social media post. He said his father had a life well lived, where he "loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that."
Donald Sutherland's acting career spanned more than 50 years and he appeared in over 100 films. His M.A.S.H. co-star Elliott Gould said in an Instagram post that Sutherland was enormously kind and generous and he felt like a brother to him.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also paid tribute to the late actor yesterday, calling him a "great Canadian artist" in a social media post.
We’ve lost one of the greats. Donald Sutherland brought a level of brilliance to his craft few could match. A remarkable, legendary actor — and a great Canadian. My thoughts are with his loved ones. Rest in peace, Donald.
