Dog Park Saga

The Ingersoll dog park committee trudges on after their suggestion of creating a dog park in Centennial park was turned down.

INGERSOLL - Despite a new dog park committee member, the status of Ingersoll's off-leash dog park has hit another roadblock.

A new site for the dog park was presented to council after the dog park committee determined the cost of the site previously approved at John Lawson Park would cost around $40-50 thousand. The cost included clearing the land and construction of fencing.

The proposed site on existing town parkland in Centennial Park was shot down by council.

Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey said parkland should be made available to everyone, not just a specific group. "The committee was looking at a specific spot in Centennial Park and from what I was hearing we can still look at other sites in Centennial Park and in having a public meeting we can find out if there are other sites or spots available within the community."

Bonnie Ward, Ingersoll Parks and Recreation Director said, "We only have 4 parks over 10 acres and two of those are already filled with sports fields...we don't have large parcels of land that have a lot of open space to be able to put a dog park."

The dog park committee has suffered a significant amount of setbacks since it's beginning 5 years ago. They lost their co-chair Wayne Daub who moved to another township. Daub was instrumental in securing the Lawson site back in 2013. The dog park committee had previously stated they would raise all the funds required for the dog parks construction.
