From November 1st to the 7th, it is Carbon Monoxide Safety Week.The Woodstock Fire department will be at locations across the Friendly City this week, including the Woodstock Library to promote their message.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire department will be out starting tomorrow to promote carbon monoxide safety.
They'll be promoting across multiple locations to ensure people have carbon monoxide alarms in their homes.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says they also want to make sure the alarms are working.
"It's a matter of maintenance. It's a matter that they do expire, we need to check the date, test them that they're working and make sure they're in the house. Another common thing that I do find when I'm out is they don't have them near the bedroom and it's imperative that you have them near the bedroom because most things happen between midnight and 6:00 am, fires and carbon monoxide leaks. So we want to know that you're going to wake up if you hear that alarm go off."
Woods adds you can not see, smell or taste carbon monoxide but it gives people flu symptoms, like a headache, and they tend to rest. She says they want to ensure people know when the alarm goes off and they're aware there is an issue in the house.
She says it is important to have them installed, after a bill was passed in 2013 to make sure a CO2 alarm is in every Ontario home.
"We do on a yearly basis have some close calls, but in general people are getting the message about carbon monoxide. We just want to make sure they maintain it and it's in the right location."
The Woodstock Fire department will be at locations across the Friendly City this week, including the Woodstock Library.
