Councillors have time to consider their options as the decision about electronic voting in municipal elections has been postponed.
WOODSTOCK - A big change might be coming to the Woodstock's municipal voting process. Council is considering the idea of electronic voting, which would allow residents to cast their ballots through the internet.
Mayor Trevor Birtch supports the concept.
"I believe that voter turn out will increase and it would be an opportunity for individuals who are away during the election to vote anywhere in the world."
Birtch adds it will also benefit some of the younger voters.
"A lot of youth are unable to vote in our current method as they are away at college and university and in this previous election they came home during the Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, advance polls were closed for Thanksgiving weekend."
Councillor Shawn Shapton made a motion to postpone the final decision until the next meeting. Councillor Deb Tait was absent and Shapton says all councillors should be present when the ruling is made.
"I think it's critical that, as a whole, we all have our voice heard before we make a decision like this. Obviously we're a couple of years away from an election so we have some time, so it was postponed until the June 2nd 2016 meeting."
The next municipal election will take place in 2018.
