Crime Severity Index Takes A Dip

The Woodstock Police Service is reporting a 27.4 percent in their Crime Severity Index for 2017.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service has released their Crime Severity Index for 2017.

They're very pleased with the results; which include 27.4 percent decrease overall.

There was also a 75.4 percent decrease in violent crime; but Deputy Chief Darren Sweazey says there is an explanation to that.

"It showed a marked decrease in the overall Crime Severity Index which was due to a large part to the Elizabeth Wettlaufer homicides, which obviously skewed our stats."

Woodstock Police are also reporting a 3.7 percent increase in non-violent crimes; also known as property crimes. Sweazey says this is fairly consistent when compared to previous years.

He is also encouraging residents to come forward whenever they witness a crime.

"We certainly encourage the public to work with us with reporting crime and actively participating in solving crimes with us. That way everybody can receive the benefit of a peaceful community which is an enjoyment to live in and work in."
