It's Crime Prevention Week in Woodstock
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police have been getting out in the community to celebrate Crime Prevention Week.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM they have had a great response to the Cops and Coffee initiative.
"Cops and coffee initiative has gone really well, people are very excited to get coffee and donuts from the police, engaged in some really important conversations from community members about crime prevention and about other things going on in their lives and in the community, so it has been really great this week."
VanLeeuwen says they have also spent a lot of time at local schools with the injury prevention team talking about the dangers of distracted driving. The theme for this year's week is community partnership.
"A lot of it is the open communication, so we rely on the community to share information, like a neighbourhood watch kind of strategy for people to come forward and let us know what is going on in the community, so a lot of it is just conversation. Building trust is important, some people their first impression or their first meeting with police isn't always a positive one, so it's been breaking down the barriers and getting people to feel comfortable enough to trust police and talk to us about things going on in our community."
