During last night's Oxford County Council meeting, council directed staff to look into some options for future recycling collection for businesses that will no longer be eligible in 2026.
OXFORD COUNTY - The blue box recycling program was a big topic at the most recent Oxford County Council meeting.
Deputy Warden Jerry Acchione says the province is making changes to the program, which will take effect in January of 2026 for Oxford.
"So there are some big changes coming that downtown BIAs will not be eligible to be picked up for recycling anymore. Some businesses will not be and some long-term care homes will not be."
After debating the topic last night, Council decided to approve a recommendation from staff, that the county not get involved in the recycling business. Acchione says council also directed staff to investigate some other options for recycling collecting for some of the non-eligible services.
"That is the piece where they're (county staff) going to come back and say we recognize that long-term care will not be collected anymore, but here is a proposal on how we can still service them and get their collectibles."
Acchione says one option could be the hiring of a third party for collection.
