Counterfeit Money on the Rise

OPP want people to be on the lookout for counterfeit currency.

Oxford OPP are warning residents of counterfeit currency making the rounds.

Since the beginning of the year OPP have received 82 reports of counterfeit bills in its West Region alone. With bills ranging from $5 to $100 both in Canadian and United States banknotes.

OPP are partnering with the Bank of Canada and the RCMP to educate citizens and business owners about how to spot counterfeit money and what to do if they encounter it.

When dealing with someone who is attempting to pass counterfeit money, cash handlers have to ensure their own safety, keep the suspicious bank note and record all relevant information about the bill and the person.

They would also like to remind citizens that no counterfeiter is able to produce and exact duplicate of a genuine bank note. At first glance, a good counterfeit can look like the real deal.
