A plan will be developed this year to blaze future trails in Oxford County. A "Trails Master Plan" will be developed, thanks to $75,000 from the County, that was approved in this years' budget. Work will be ramping up on developing the plan, now that a work plan has been tabled, and steering committee approved. Oxford Warden, and East-Zorra-Tavistock Mayor Don McKay, and Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey will be a part of that committee. A consultant will also be hired to work on the plan. Oxford Tourism Specialist Cathy Bingham tells Heart FM, "Certainly trails in Oxford are a great public health feature. A community that is more active, is more healthy, and think of all the dollars you may save down the line in terms of health care." Bingham also believes a trails network, connecting communities can also be a tourism draw for Oxford. "That's the game that I'm in, and certainly we're thrilled about the possibility of looking at the existing trails we have, and looking at the possible linkages there might be between the existing trails, and between neighbouring trails." While Council has provided some seed funding this year to start the plan down the path, Bingham says the Trail Council will be looking for grants to help kick the stone further down the road. "There are a number of opportunities for us there...with the Trails Council, who are a registered non-profit organization, we are able to apply for certain grants that municipalities cannot apply for, so it makes for a really strong partnership."
