Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey hopes the town, the Ministry of Labour, GM and Unifor can find a way to reduce the amount of layoffs within the next couple of months.
INGERSOLL - Ingersoll's Mayor is speaking out after GM recently announced they will be laying off employees at the Ingersoll Cami Plant this summer. 600 workers are expected to be out of work this July.
Mayor Ted Comiskey is worried about the community impact.
"There isn't anything we do on a daily basis that doesn't involve the community whether it's buying a coffee at Tim Hortons or going down to buy something at the hardware store; it's all part of the community. This many families being affected will certainly have some effect."
Comiskey hopes the town, the Ministry of Labour, GM and Unifor can find a way to reduce the amount of people being laid off before this summer. Comiskey would also like to find a way to help the impacted employees. He wants to keep all Unifor workers within the community if possible.
"The Unifor workers are number 1! They are great people, they produce a fantastic product, they're good workers and they're good for the community. Unifor has been so supportive of everything that the town has undertaken, in there beside us and we'd hate to lose any of them."
