Southwestern Public Health has issued a cold weather for St. Thomas, Elgin and Oxford County this weekend.
The region is expected to be on the northern fringe of a major storm this weekend. Cold temperatures are expected to start on Saturday with strong wind gusts reaching 50 km/hr. Even colder wind chill values approaching minus 30 are possible Sunday into Monday morning.
Residents are being asked to take certain precautions to protect themselves from the cold this weekend. The biggest concerns is frostbite and hypothermia.
Those most vulnerable to the effects of the cold include older adults, infants and young children, outdoor workers, those who participate in outdoor sports such as skiing and hiking, and homeless persons and others who do not have shelter, proper clothing or food.
