"Peer support is about people helping people to find help for themselves. That is what self help services are about."
The Oxford Self Help Network has been helping locals with mental health and addictions problems for 25 years now.
CMHA Executive Director Mike McMahon explains how the network has benefited Oxford County.
"Peer support is about people, helping people to find help for themselves. That is what self help services are about - they're diverse, they're community focused, and they're lead by people who have had some experience."
McMahon adds Oxford Self Help has been a great asset to the community in multiple ways.
"Not only did Oxford Self Help provide services in the community over a number of years but on behalf of the health system they were able to provide gainful employment to people who have had a lived experience with mental health and addictions issues. I think that is an amazing story."
CMHA Oxford's Woodstock location hosted an anniversary celebration yesterday. They discussed 25 ways the network has helped county residents in the last 25 years including developing the in-reach program at the hospital and establishing the Mood Group and Schizophrenia group.
