Southwestern Public Health released a statement clarifying on how they assign case numbers to municipalities. This comes after there was confusion over COVID-19 case numbers in Elgin County.
OXFORD / ELGIN / ST.THOMAS – Southwestern Public Health is providing some clarification on how they assign case numbers to municipalities.
This comes after there was confusion over COVID-19 case numbers in Elgin County.
In a recent statement, they say the quality of their data is very important to them and their data shapes the decisions they make.
SWPH’s municipal, health system and social service partners use the statistics taken from this data to make decisions about their own service delivery. They take their responsibility as keepers of this data very seriously and review the numbers regularly for accuracy and consistency.
Data is entered into a provincial database that records all cases of infectious disease of public health significance. SWPH uses the same method for recording cases of COVID-19 that’s done for other cases of infectious disease. Each case is entered into the provincial database and assigned to one of the 16 municipalities within the region. They take the name of the individual’s town or city, as listed in their mailing address, and use that to assign the case to a municipality.
In regards to the case numbers reported in Aylmer and Malahide Township, these communities are reported separately.
However, individuals who have a mailing address that says “Aylmer” are listed as an Aylmer case even though they consider themselves as residents of Malahide, they pay taxes in Malahide and other people consider them to live in Malahide.
