OXFORD COUNTY - A well-known farmer from the Beachville area is representing the Christian Heritage Party in the Oxford County federal byelection.
John Markus has lived in Oxford since 1967 and he has spent most of his life working in agriculture.
"I am well connected to the Oxford County community. We run dairy, hogs, and beef and we also do a fair bit of custom work. In a lot of ways, our family is almost a household name in Oxford County among the agriculture community."
He explains why he has decided to enter politics.
"The parachuting in of a candidate from afar when we have so many capable leaders in Oxford County. The other reason I wanted to run, due to all of the circumstances and events that have occurred in Oxford County along with the things going on in society, the reason I ran was so the people who are concerned about the events in Oxford County can vote with a clear conscience before God before they go to sleep, and still do their civic duty."
Markus says the agriculture industry has increased its production five-fold over the past 70 years, and it has been a leader in terms of reducing its carbon footprint.
"If the auto industry and the gasoline engine had accomplished what agriculture had done, we would be getting approximately 25 kilometres out of a litre of fuel, because 70 years ago we were getting about one kilometre per five litres. We wouldn't even have a carbon footprint problem in the world if everyone had done what agriculture has accomplished."
The Oxford County byelection is scheduled for June 19th.
