Local girl recovering from early onset of rheumatoid arthritis.
TILLSONBURG - An 11 year old Tillsonburg girl can once again go skating and play soccer, just three years after being diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Maggie Sanders was diagnosed in May of 2012 after her parents noticed some swelling in her foot.
Maggie's father Ted says the family received great news at their last medical appointment.
Ted says having a child with arthritis is difficult, but manageable.
Manager of Community Development for the The Arthritis Society Dan Knight says there are some common signs and symptoms parents can look for if they have concerns their child may have arthritis.
"If you notice a joint that is enflamed or maybe so redness or stiffness for a couple of weeks, definitely go get it tested and looked at. A lot of people say they think it's growing pains so they might brush it off a little bit, ignore it, but definitely have it tested. There's blood tests you can have done, there's x-rays you can have done to determine if it is indeed arthritis and catch it early if you can."
24 thousand children and teens in Canada are living with arthritis.
