Check Your Smoke Alarms this Weekend

The Woodstock Fire Department is reminding everyone to check their smoke alarms tomorrow.

WOODSTOCK - You've heard Saved By the Bell, but what about Saved By the Beep?

The Woodstock Fire Department is joining several communities across the province encouraging everyone to test their smoke alarms.

Chief Jeff Slager says September 28th is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.

"Being prepared to act in the event of a fire starts with simply pressing the test button and having the confidence that a working smoke alarm is in your home. Lives will be saved by testing smoke alarms at least once a month, refreshing batteries at least once a year, and replacing smoke alarms older than 10 years."

The Woodstock Fire Department would like you to do the following tomorrow:

- Make sure you have a smoke alarm on each level of your home. This also includes any vacation homes, cabins or trailers you own.

- Press the test button on your smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly with a loud beeping sound.

- Replace the battery or make sure the alarm is connected to a power source.

- Replace all smoke alarms over 10 years old. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your smoke alarm to confirm the expiration date.

- If you are renting, make sure you inform your landlord if your smoke alarm is not working.

Up to 133 people were killed in deadly fires across the province back in 2022, which is the highest total the province has seen in over 20 years. Many of those fires did not have working smoke alarms present.
