The CFIA says they have no plans to expand quarantine zones in Oxford County at this time.
OXFORD - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has no plans to expand the quarantine zones in Oxford County despite a third farm in the area testing positive for the H5 virus.
Two 10 km radius control zones have been set up in the County as three farms have now been impacted by H5 Avian influenza.
The CFIA was not available for comment over the phone however they did answer some of our questions via email. Control zones will only be lifted once the CFIA is confident the virus has been adequately contained and right now no time frame has been given. This process typically involves weekly or bi-weekly monitoring and testing at all poultry premises in the control zones. The CFIA did say they could expand the zones if the investigation reveals it is warranted.
Over 80,000 turkeys and chickens have been destroyed in Oxford County since the outbreak first started in early April.
The CFIA did release this statement to Heart FM about the impact of H-5 on the poultry industry:
"Currently, this outbreak directly involves three premises. The establishment of individual quarantines and the Avian Influenza Control Zones are part of an internationally accepted practice to allow trade to continue from non-infected areas of a country.
The Province of Ontario, the CFIA, the owner of the infected premises, and the poultry industry are all working closely together to manage the situation and address issues as they emerge.
Poultry farmers are reminded to practice a high level of biosecurity to reduce the risk of disease spread, and report any suspicious symptoms in their flocks to the CFIA.
