This week is a time to celebrate and honour our local police officers.
WOODSTOCK - Police Week officially kicks off today.
Special Constable Shaylyn Jackson talks about her role with the Woodstock Police.
"Woodstock Police really likes to involve the community in a variety of ways. A big important part of the Community Services Unit is crime prevention and safety education, so a lot of time is spent in schools educating students on a variety of ways that they can keep themselves safe. Whether that be pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, internet safety and making them aware of drugs and alcohol and the impacts of the variety of issues we see in adults and young adults, as well. So, teaching them how they can stay safe and stay on a good path while also creating positive relationships with police officers and young people, and with the community in general."
Jackson adds they also educate parents and a variety of community groups on their service and how to help them keep themselves safe.
Jackson is a part of the Community Services Unit as a Community Services Officer and her role often takes her into schools, educating kids on how to stay safe.
She says the students are always happy to see her.
"In the schools, the kids always seem to react very positively and always have plenty of questions for us and it's really about developing that positive relationship. At events like Coffee With A Cop and other community engagement events that we attend, the public always seem to be happy to engage with us and have the opportunity just to ask questions and have conversations about what our police service has to offer."
Police Week celebrates the important role of police officers and personnel promoting healthy and safe communities across Ontario.
Heart FM will conduct interviews all week with different police officers to commemorate their work in the community.
Police Week runs until May 17th.
