The CAW Local 88 is looking to press the issue when it comes to stalled out talks with GM. The union has called a strike mandate meeting, set for August 18th in London. The Sunday morning meeting at the Western Fair Progress building could lead to a strike mandate from the 3000 workers at CAMI GM Assembly. CAW Local 88 President Borthwick expects a large turnout in just over a week at the meeting. "A good portion of our members will be in attendance. We'll recap the reasons why we need a strike vote, both legally, and through the overview of negotiations, and why the support of the membership is needed as we challenge the company to bring a fair collective agreement for our members." Borthwick gives Heart FM an update on the status of negotiations. "We have I'll say hallway conversations with GM. There's no formal meeting scheduled, but we do have off the cuff conversations. We don't plan on meeting formally until September the 8th." The old agreement expires on September 16th. GM continues work on a $250-million plant expansion that will house a new body shop, tooling and equipment for future vehicles.
