Workers asking for public support during their contract talks
WOODSTOCK - Workers at Caressant Care in Woodstock held up signs and handed out flyers this afternoon asking for the public's support in their contract talks.
President of UNIFOR local 636 Ross Gerrie says their needs are simple.
"We're out here trying to get the employer to get back to the bargaining table and bargain a collective agreement for these workers who have been without a collective agreement since March."
"They're waiting in despair saying you know, we haven't had a raise here in three years, it's time for a raise. It's time to look after the patients and it's time to look after us. Give them the best possible care and the best possible people looking after them."
"We're not asking for ridiculous things. We are asking for fair compensation compared to every other home in Ontario. They're a little bit low in some areas and they just want to be brought up."
Gerrie says the union had met with the employer over a five day period working to hammer out a deal but nothing could be reached.
A Caressant Care spokesperson was unavailable for comment Thursday.
