This is not an April Fools joke.
CANADA - An increase to the Liberal Carbon Tax takes effect today, rising to 23%.
Canadians will now see an increase in prices for their necessities from filling up gas tanks to heating their homes. At the same time, British Columbia, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories didn't get hit by the carbon levy rise on fossil fuels.
In Ontario, the gas tax went up 3.3 cents increasing it to 17.6 cents per liter, while diesel will go up about 4 cents. Heating bills will be added an extra $5.40 a month, and the price of pollution will increase to $15.00 per tonne. Taxes on alcohol will also go up by 2%.
Carbon pricing is planned to increase every year until 2030, which is the federal government's way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Ottawa's consumer levy is added to the price of over 20 different fuel sources producing greenhouse gas emissions when burned, that include of gasoline, propane, diesel, and natural gas.
They are adjusting the Canada Carbon Rebate where Canadians will see higher paybacks. The start of the next quarterly payment will be on April 15th.
