Everyone is encouraged to check their carbon monoxide alarms ahead of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.
WOODSTOCK - Oxford's MPP and the Woodstock Fire Department have kicked off the third annual Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.
The week was created as part of Ernie Hardeman's private members' bill, the Hawkins-Gignac act, making C-O detectors mandatory in all homes with a source of carbon monoxide.
"The reason we created carbon monoxide awareness week is so each year we could go out and make sure peopel recognize the importance of having a detector in their home. We always had the detectors, we just didn't realize how important it was to have one in your home."
Hardeman encourages everyone to check on the alarms, and ensure they are properly maintained.
"They have to be replaced every seven to ten years and obviously people don't think about that. I have my detector and I don't think about it anymore. It's important that we think of maintaining them."
The week officially begins on Tuesday, November 1st and runs for a full week.
Erine Hardeman will also be accompanying the Woodstock Fire Deparment as they do another round of Carbon Monoxide Alarms for Pizza. The Fire Department will follow a pizza delivery driver and if the home is properly equiped with a detector, the department will pay for the pizza.
