WOODSTOCK - Cannabis is legal today for adults in Canada.
Oxford County had a Q and A this morning at the Administration Building. The event is hosted by the Southwestern Public Health Unit and is meant to clear up any question and concerns of curious citizens.
Kristine Fox attended the event and was happy to have some items cleared up.
"I think the misconception was that now you can smoke cannabis like you smoke cigarettes and that is not the case, for right now in Ontario, you can only smoke at your residence and on your property is the only place right and that will change as legislation works itself out and every municipality will be able to decide where they want to proceed."
Fox says they were not able to answer all of the questions.
"People had questions about crossing into the US, some of answers were unclear or we were told to contact US border security. Some people were asking for statistics, is it known to be a gateway drug, that was answer no because in other states that have legalized they have said that with the legalization of marijuana there haven't been any other increases of any other illegal drugs."
Right now you can only buy legal marijuana online through the government web site and edibles will not become legal until next year.
About 50 people attended the event this morning, while others were able to watch online through Facebook Live. Panelists included Addition Services of Thames Valley, Canadian Health Association, Oxford Drug Awareness Committee, Ontario Provincial Police, Southwestern Public Health Unit, and the Woodstock Police Service.
