During a review, Tillsonburg noticed its network was insecure. The discovery triggered a closed meeting last Wednesday where two bylaws were approved, cancelling contracts with the town?s IT service provider, INS Consulting. Members of the public were concerned over the security measures taken at town sites, so a special meeting was held Tuesday to give a better explanation. Mel Getty says communicating why the security guards were at town sites was the biggest issue. ?If that was communicated to the staff and the public sooner than it was then it would have been a nonissue completely. So the security guards isn?t the issue it was communicating their presence,? said Getty. The town?s Mayor John Lessif apologized for the anxiety this caused, but said it?s never a cookie cutter approach. ?When you face an issue as large as this, in hindsight there?s always a better way of doing it. The next crisis that we may have to deal with, hopefully there won?t be, the cards that are laid out in front of you to deal with that particular issue will probably dictate a different approach,? said Lessif. Acting CAO David Samis says security issues are still in review. ?County IT staff are in working with us on assessing our network. KPMG helped us back-up our network, so we?re trying to maintain and not lose any data. As well, the assistance we?ve got from their assessment is helping us determine our next steps forward. We want to develop an in-house solution that will suit our needs and suit the citizens of the town as well,? said Samis. Town staff say they will work to find a better balance between confidentiality and communication. Security issues are still in review and an IT Transition Team has been appointed to recommend future direction.
