"I think it is going to be longer than October to be honest with you, I'm not sure when we will be back to work."
INGERSOLL - Employees at the GM CAMI plant in Ingersoll will out of work until at least October 4th.
The plant has over 1,600 unionized workers, who have been laid for most of 2021 because of a global chip shortage.
CAMI employees have been shut down since February and only had a 3 week period of steady work in the month of June. Currently only about 70 employees are still working full time.
The issue stems from a supply shortage of parts, with manufacturers hit hard by COVID-19 in Malaysia and other countries.
Speaking with Heart FM, Plant Chair Mike Van Boekel didn't sound too optimistic about the October 4th date.
"I think it is going to be longer than October to be honest with you, I'm not sure when we will be back to work, COVID-19 is hitting some of these countries really hard and it is causing the parts shortages."
Van Boekel says this has been an extremely difficult year for laid off CAMI employees. The CAMI layoff impacts several other suppliers as well, including several manufacturing facilities in Southwestern Ontario.
GM has promised at least two shifts when the Bright Drops hits the production line. This is the new electric vehicle that will be built at the CAMI plant.
