General Motors said to be making big CAMI announcement at Auto Show in Toronto
INGERSOLL - Good news for CAMI Automotive employees in Ingersoll, after GM announced that they will be investing 800 million dollars to the plant which will include re-tooling for the launch of the new generation Chevrolet Equinox that will be expected to be produced anywhere from 1.5 to 2 years. The money will also be spent training current employees for the transition. Mike Van Boekel Plant Chairperson for CAMI enjoys what this will do for the local economy.
"I think it is wonderful there is always a big ripple effect from the housing market to everything else. It just gives everybody just a sense of relief and they can make fairly decent long term plans right now because it is absolutely a huge investment for Canada, for Ontario, and for the Ingersoll Community.''
CAMI Automotive will get a revamp of the 27 year old Ingersoll plant Van Boekel explains on how this will confirm job stability.
"So we are still going incredibly strong now so all this will mean will be job stability probably for the next 5-10 years going out probably 8-10 years for sure. It looks very good for the CAMI plant."
The employees were able to breathe a sigh of relief that the plant won't be leaving the area anytime soon, and that it is a very busy time for the manufacturing operation.
"Our plant is running 3 shifts, 24 hours a day, 6 days a week we are starting to see 2-3 people retire pretty well every month so they are hiring 2 or 3 times a year to replace all the people that are trading out of our plant."
Over the last 1.5 years the CAMI Automotive has undergone a 350,000ft expansion which currently employees nearly 3000 people. Van Boekel would like to thank all the loyal customers.
