Bullying Issues Reaches Parliament

The issue of bullying reached the floor of the House of Commons today, but is it an issue of federal importance? A New Democrat MP who was bullied himself is calling for a national strategy to combat bullying. He says the suicide last week of Vancouver teen Amanda Todd highlights a national concern and demands a solution. The Conservatives say while bullying should never be tolerated, it can be dealt with at the local level better than the federal. Oxford MP Dave MacKenzie agrees. "There is a lot the government of Canada is doing, but where we need to do the work, and we've been working with the provinces through the schools and communities to deal with this on the ground. There are lots of laws in many respects that deal with what's happening in bullying." MacKenzie believes education is key to the issue of bullying, in not having it escalate to kids taking their own lives. He says students need to know there is help out there, and parents and teachers need to know when there's a problem. But he doesn't believe there is some good that is coming from the situation going national. "One of the benefits, it drives home the message more and more. The more people hear about it, the more families hear about it, the more children hear about it and they'll seek the help they need."
