SPCA telling residents that dogs and other animals need to be brought inside during the extreme cold

OXFORD COUNTY - It's not just humans who need shelter from the cold, but animals as well.

Inspector with the Ontario SPCA Brandon James says it's simple -- if you don't have a dog house, you need to bring your dog inside. 

"If there's a problem with the dog chewing or doing things inside the house that are undesirable then learn crate training for the dog for weather such as this. Provide them with a proper dog house that's insulated, elevated off the ground to keep it dry and have some type of wind break to prevent wind tunnelling in there and loss of body heat is the best thing."

"They are living beings. They do feel the cold -- in different ways than you and I -- but I mean cold will effect them," continued James. "It's a misconception that people believe that because the dog has a coat or because the dog enjoys being in the snow that it must remain outside at all times -- that's certainly not true."

James says water dishes can freeze very quickly as can dogs who are left out for extended periods of time.

"The SPCA Act states that the animals need to be provided proper protection from the elements. That could be rain, that could be snow, ice, wind or extreme heat. Any time during the year charges are possible if the animals aren't provided that specific protection."

James asks that residents keep an eye out for your neighbour's animals during the cold snap and report any concerns you may have.
