Brett Opthof Postpones Bruce Trail Run Until Next Year

He was supposed to run the nearly 900 km journey from Tobermory to Niagara at the end of this month to raise money and awareness for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. While no date has been set, Opthof says he'd prefer to run the entire route in the spring of 2020.

WOODSTOCK - Brett Opthof of Woodstock has decided to postpone his run on the Bruce Trail this year.

He wrote in a Facebook post yesterday that in order to perform, he needs to be in optimal, peak condition.

Opthof says while he prefers to run next spring, no date has been set.

"For starters, I didn't even come close to getting the training in and my friends, who were helping me out, and they saw that and obviously I didn't see it. I thought I could do it regardless."

He was supposed to run the 898 km journey from Tobermory to Niagara at the end of this month to raise money and awareness for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Opthof says the support from family and friends played a role in postponing the run.

"They're all behind him and it's through their support is the reason I have actually listened to them, for once. I am going to postpone because a lot of them were voicing their opinion."

He says he will still run the Bruce Trail this year, just not all at once, and he will do the entire route next year.

Opthof says he will still run on Labour Day weekend, but he'll just start a couple of days earlier and run as far as he can before he stops and continue a few weeks later.
