Several options are being thrown around when it comes to saving the Trillium Railway.
Mayors of the South Central Ontario Region are hoping the provincial and federal governments provide funding to help save the Trillium Railway.
The east west railroad system ceased operations last month due to the high costs of repairs to bridges and trestles.
The closure directly impacts six businesses in Tillsonburg alone along with several in Norfolk County and St Thomas.
Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif says SCOR came up with a few options at a special meeting held earlier this week.
"One of the possibilities is we could, perhaps as a group, buy the line and have a company operate it. So instead of CN owning it, there is a possibility that we could do a combined municipality approach to purchasing it."
The other option, according to Lessif is a private industry purchasing it and having someone operate it. He says there is currently a short line railway company running a north south line that could potentially be interested.
Lessif says he isn't giving up hope that the rail line can be saved.
"It is savable. It will need some investments. Investments we think need to come from the federal government."
Lessif says if a solution cannot be found by June 20, the line will be completely shut down and force the businesses using it to move to transport trucks to move their goods, a move that would significantly increase their cost of doing business.
