Canadian Blood Services in desperate need of donors
WOODSTOCK - Only 4 per cent of those eligible, donate blood in Canada.
Not only that, but Canadian Blood Services says their blood inventory this summer is the lowest it's been in over five years.
Territory Manager Lisa Ruck says the summer season is always the toughest time to collect blood because so many regular donors go on summer vacation.
"We're also seeing about a 30 per cent no show rate for appointments so that's people making appointments and then just not showing up. We really encourage people, if you do have an appointment, please honour it or if you have to cancel it, no problem but please give us a heads up so that we know and can open that appointment up to other potential donors."
The organization started Saturday clinics in Woodstock back in April and have yet to meet their collection goals.
Ruck says they have a new 'Give Blood' app for Apple and Android phones free of charge.
"What that allows you to do is sign in with your donor ID number, or if you don't have one, that's okay. You can put in your address and it will automatically populate all of the clinics that are close to you. If you want to donate somewhere where you work or whether you want to donate somewhere where your kids play sports, anything like that, you can just put it in that app and it will populate for you."
Canadian Blood Services is hosting a donor clinic on Saturday, July 19th at Maranatha Church in Woodstock from 9 a.m. – noon where they hope to collect 58 units of blood.
There will be a blood donor clinic Thursday evening from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Unifor Local 88 Hall in Ingersoll as well.
